Ballet Teaching

When I was dancing, being exposed to guest teachers was a great experience. I am available for guest teaching and coaching.

Key Benefits
• Former director of a successful school and pre-professional ballet training program. I know what guest teachers can and can't do.
• Reasonable fees, transportation, and housing requirements.
• A proven 6 year training syllabus.
• A love of teaching dancers of all ages and abilities.

Capabilities
I enjoyed visiting teachers when they came to my schools at Southern Ballet Theatre and San Francisco Ballet. While our "regular" teachers were fabulous, just getting comments from a different set of eyes was really helpful.

I believe I was blessed with the ability to inspire dancers and to help them suspend their self-imposed limitations. I am strict in class -- especially regarding dance clothes, hair, and student talking -- but demanding in a safe, empowering manner. I often hear from new students "he's strict but I loved his class!"

Classes & Levels Offered
I enjoy teaching a range of ballet classes and subjects. I’m most effective with dancers from age 8 and above, including adults. I enjoy teaching any ability range from beginner to professional. I prefer a pianist but am comfortable with recorded music on CD.
• Ballet Technique
• Pointe
• Men’s Class
• Partnering
• Composition
• Improvisation (contact and non-contact)
• Dance History

Dress & Behavior Code
Teaching dance is a wonderful experience as is learning to dance. From the beginning I like to encourage the students to be prompt, disciplined, and neat in their appearance and their dancing. As a result, I enforce a strict dress & behavior code. For girls in ballet class: a solid colored leotard of the school’s preference (one color only per day), pink tights, pink ballet/pointe shoes, and hair secured firmly in a bun. For boys in ballet class: a white T shirt with black tights, white shoes, and white socks. As far as behavior is concerned, I’ve found that if the students don’t talk, they tend to behave better and get more out of class and rehearsal. Therefore, refraining from talking in class and exhibiting respect for their teacher and their classmates is required. Those that choose not to are removed from class.

Capabilities
I've been in the dance field for over 34 years, having enjoyed professional positions as a dancer, ballet master, artistic director, teacher, and choreographer. I trained at the San Francisco Ballet School and danced with numerous companies, including Southern Ballet Theatre and Naples Ballet Theatre. Since 1994, I've choreographed over 23 ballets. I enjoy working with a variety of dancers but typically enjoy dancers with strong classical backgrounds.

Choreography for Schools

Working with younger dancers is rewarding and challenging. I can set shorter versions (30-45 minutes) of classical ballets as well as design dances specifically for a solo or ensemble dancers.

Key Benefits
• Professional quality classical ballet and contemporary ballet designed to teach and inspire student dancers.
• Abbreviated versions of classical ballets such as Coppelia and The Nutcracker which are ideal for mixed concerts or recitals.
• Reasonable fees, transportation, and housing requirements.
• Extensive experience working with student dancers in a rehearsal environment that preserves and enhances their self-esteem.

Capabilities
Having been a school director, teacher, and choreographer for student dancers, I possess a love for the kids balanced with a commitment to the project and an emphasis on learning from the process. It is both exciting and challenging to see what can happen in a rehearsal filled with eager and talented dancers. Many of my greatest ideas have come from them.
